On behalf of Shen’s SADD Club, I wish to express my gratitude to Nick Lehning and CJ Dean of Mohonasen High School for their inspiration and heart in creating this first annual “Safe Driving Awareness Christmas Cup” event at Afrim, Inc. on Route 7 in Latham. (Afrim is the huge dome-shaped building in back of the NYSUT building on Route 7. )
Please plan to attend this important fundraiser that Nick and CJ have put together with Afrim, Inc. to help unite people in a common goal (pun absolutely intended). A percentage of the proceeds will be given to the Shenendehowa SADD Club in memory of Deanna Rivers and Chris Stewart. Contact Afrim, Inc. 518-438-3131, Ms. Tina Lehning 518-708-9056, or Ms. Susan Burns, Shen SADD Advisor, 518-881-0330 x. 62651 for more information.
Welcome to the 2012-2013 school year! SADD stands for Students Against Destructive Decisions. Our club is a chapter of a national organization that empowers young people to make positive choices that promote health, wellness and personal safety. We would love to see the day when no young person’s life is cut short because of dangers such as involvement with drugs or alcohol, bullying, or texting while driving.
The Shenendehowa SADD Club is excited to announce several new initiatives, some of which began in the 2011-2012 school year. The more students who get involved, the more we can do together! We welcome students from grades 9-12. Please join us whenever you can. Those who wish to take a more active role should keep in mind that officer elections will take place in November, and we have several positions you can run for!
Here’s a quick recap of some of more recent and on-going developments:
1.) We meet most Tuesdays, 3 p.m., in High School West. Please report to the HSW Cafeteria and wait for Mrs. Burns.
2.) Our parent liaison is PTSA President Sally Vanderzee, a volunteer who has lent much time, talent, energy, and ideas!
3.) We are beginning to network with a group whose mission and passion very much mirrors our own–The Shenendehowa Community Coalition.
3.) Just as SADD club has a partnership with Liberty Mutual Insurance on a national level, we have a local partnership with Robin Raciborski of Liberty Mutual. Robin is helping us organize a Speaker’s Bureau that will begin in late November!

S.A.D.D. is a National Organization which stands for Students Against Destructive Decisions. Originally, the mission of the SADD chapter was to help young people say “NO” to drinking and driving. Today, the mission has expanded.
Students say that positive peer pressure, role modeling and environmental strategies can prevent other destructive decisions and set a healthier, safer course for life.
Organizations need new members to bring fresh energy and ideas; this is especially true for our High School Chapter of SADD. We encourage you to attend a meeting. There are many ways in which a S.A.D.D. club can get involved in the school community. In the past, S.A.D.D. club at Shenendehowa has been involved with the Chain of Life at Homecoming, the Contract for Life, S.A.D.D. week, and Safe Spring. In order to plan and coordinate activities, however, we need students to get involved.
SADD club meeting are held at High School West every Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. in the Cafeteria. We are always seeking new members. All 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th graders are welcome to attend.
